ENGLISH VERSIONThe Submission Deadline ended with May 10 2020 - Link to the submissionsIntroduction text to the Open Call Corona FuturesCOVID-19: A state of emergency as an intersection of realities? Corona as a chance for what? A dystopian wildcard as the stumbling block to social - even utopian - transformation?
How can current events be dealt with from the perspective of social-ecological research, (transformation) design and the arts? How can the current situation act as a social reset and initiate sustainable interactions between people and people and people and environment / world? (How) Can the conditions, practices, forms of communication, forms of teaching and learning, leisure activities and offers ... resulting from the virus and the quarantine encourage reflection on desirable futures? In quarantine, do we arrive at new insights and ideas about alternative futures? How can fragments of the changes / disruptions caused by the coronavirus be a chance for a tipping point towards long-term socio-ecologically compatible and sustainable life on planet Earth?
The Open Call understands the current situation as a social challenge, as a design problem, as a wicked problem. This call sees itself as an invitation to collect reflections and thoughts for both acutely-pragmatic and long-term-sustainable ways of dealing with the situation. This collection is about emergency measures concerning the virus as well as a reflexive handling of the symptoms and reactions that go beyond the actual clinical picture (social, economic, political, ...). What / How can we already learn from this unusual situation - for the present and the future? Which existing structures are implicitly questioned at the moment and what do possible futures look like that can be thought of from the current situation? What comes after Corona? In addition to the terrible effects of the disease, can learning effects be achieved in order to contribute to shaping a healthy, sustainable and resilient world community? How can the readiness to act of politics, the economy and the civil population be extended to the active handling of other social-ecological challenges? The Call aims to bring together actors from the fields of research, design and art in order to strengthen the understanding between the disciplines and to learn from each other, to interlink different perspectives more strongly, to recognize each other and to promote interdisciplinary cooperation. At the same time, all other interested stakeholders are also invited to see the current situation as an opportunity and to contribute their perspectives and thoughts to this project. The call is not intended as a generator of solutions, but rather as a pool of ideas for possibilities, an inspiring exchange of ideas and for the expansion of options for action.
Why should you participate? You contribute to the current situation, you will be mentioned by name, you will be featured on the Contributors List including your web presence and your submission will be shared with others via the CORONA FUTURES Instagram account. Let us turn on the virus program together and become part of a constructive, interdisciplinary, creative and future-oriented exchange against the virus and for new futures. The call is intended as an encouragement to also submit work-in-progress approaches and unfinished work and to take the current situation as an opportunity to address anti-social, unsustainable, capitalist, externalizing, unjust, exploitative ... circumstances to make structures visible and to speculate and discuss about alternatives and reflect on our lifestyles and values. Criteria of scientific work do not play a superficial role. Submissions to the Open Call collected here under CORONA FUTURES. We are looking for contributions that deal with the current situation, reflect on it and/or develop future scenarios from it. In the foreground is the question of how the current / individual situation can be the starting point for questioning supposed normalities, conceiving alternatives, understanding the situation as a design task and conceiving desirable futures. A collaborative blog is created here from individual contributions. The submitted works should be digitally available, otherwise there are no restrictions. Whether scientific text, personal reflection, 3D rendering, animation, film, history, note, essay, key point, voice recording, sound / audio, photography, video, photographed drawing, graphics, installation, documented performance or actions, other (spontaneous) artistic forms of access and expression, (critical) design projects, the development of corona-inspired dystopias and utopias, provocative elaborations or the development of practices and aesthetics for dealing with quarantine, loneliness and boredom ... At the same time, the resulting transdisciplinary gallery will be supplemented by links to selected external projects and articles. The following questions could be the subject of (your) further considerations:
How can existing realities and normalities be challenged and desirable futures be conceived? How can the current situation become a basis for new / future lifestyles and routines? What can be learned from the current situation for other, current and future socio-ecological challenges? How can the acute readiness for action of politics, economy and civil population be extended to the active handling of other social-ecological challenges? How can the situation be reflected upon and dealt with from an artistic perspective? How can the crisis be made bearable? What does staying at home mean? What demands do "we" make on our lives, what demands inevitably change temporarily and what should change permanently? Which new practices can be made visible / understandable in which way? What world will we look back on in the spring of 2021? What will have changed? What will have been really important? What will we have really needed? Can we already now imagine a world of post-corona?
